A Warm Welcome

Alick & Mari

ALICK & MARI BARTHOLOMEW

Alick and Mari aim to make your stay as enjoyable and as comfortable as possible. Both the Cottage and the Retreat are furnished tastefully with many real paintings and prints. Most of the floor coverings and furnishings are in natural fibres. We provide a good selection of books – fiction and non-fiction, games, jig-saws, videos (in the Cottage), CDs, audio-tapes etc. also local maps and guides to help you get to know the area. We provide free WiFi connection.

There is a comprehensive file of ‘Places of Interest’ and information on restaurants, cafés, theatre, cinema. In addition we have information on church services and important emergency telephone numbers for doctors, dentist, hospitals etc.

On request we will send you an inventory of kitchen equipment, so that you can decide if it is necessary to bring a particular item, e.-g. a cafetière which we provide, and tea-towels, dish cloth, washing-up liquid. We also provide the first toilet roll, local maps and guides, torch etc.

Upon your arrival we welcome you personally and offer any assistance that you require. After this we leave you in peace to enjoy your stay, but are always on hand if needed. We have arranged that the entrances to both Holly Cottage and The Retreat are completely separate, approached from two different lanes, and on opposite sides of the three-quarters acre property.

Each property has its own patio or garden with, for Holly Cottage guests, a large main communal lawn which can be used for games that we have such as badminton, swing-ball or a paddling pool for young ones. Safe and more grown-up paddling can be had in the stream just beyond the enclosed garden. Energetic ball games are discouraged due to possible breakages! There is a playground next to the village hall.

Bed linen
Bed linen is all cotton with feather pillows and duvets on double, king-size, and sofa-beds (if used). Duvets and pillows on the bunk beds (Holly Cottage) are hollow-fibre and non-allergenic. We have spares of the hollow-fibre bedding for allergy sufferers should you require this.

Towels
We provide hand towels in the shower-rooms and kitchen along with two tea-towels.

Utilities
We meter oil and electricity use, but we give you a gratis allowance of £10 per week for each utility (which covers normal use). In the unusual case of there being a balance, this will be settled on your departure.

Water
We have one of the best public water supplies in Britain, which comes from a large aquifer under the Mendip Hills. It is of good quality (except for the chlorine that all water authorities routinely add). Nevertheless, from our research into water quality, we believe that the purest water is found in natural streams, when it is in constant spiral movement.
See: The Story of Water

We give you the use of a vortex jug which replicates water‘s movement in a stream, restructures it and makes it much more beneficial to drink than tap water. It also removes the chlorine and other harmful substances. So you will not need to bring bottled water for your holiday!

Chlorinated Water
is not good to drink. In the long-term chlorine weakens our immune systems. The Environmental Protection Agency in the USA points out the risks to health from chlorine when it turns into chloroform gas in hot showers or washing machines. This gas can be absorbed by soft furnishings carpets etc. , with long-term health effects. We have installed a special filter which removes the chlorine from the whole house and garden.
